Beyond enforcement of the Human Rights and Fair Housing laws, the Commission’s mission is to prevent discrimination by educating the public on their rights and obligations under the law. The creators of the Commission envisioned that it would “foster tolerance among the inhabitants of Westchester County” and “study the problems of prejudice, intolerance, bigotry and disorder.”
Toward this goal, the Human Rights Commission seeks to become a center for dialogue, debate and contemporary thought on policy in civil rights and race relations, grounded in the experience and empirical data gained from being on the frontlines of America’s efforts against unlawful discrimination.
The dedicated staff at the Human Rights Commission has devoted countless hours to educating the public on issues of housing discrimination in inventive and creative ways. The commission has spoken at many schools on the subject of fair housing in an effort to educate the next generation to come. In March of this year, our staff spoke at the Westchester County Housing Expo which provides a myriad of accessible information to housing seekers. The commission has also organized many Town Hall meetings where the public can address the most current fair housing issues.
Our Director of Fair Housing, Alexandra Piscionere, recently lectured on Ebola discrimination at a UN-sponsored conference.
